Oosterend, the prettiest village on Texel
Our farm Vogelvlucht, with its accommodations Lepelaar, Tureluur, Strandloper, B&(no)B de Stormvogel en TEST KAMER, sits in the countryside near the picturesque, historic village of Oosterend.
Many people consider it the prettiest village on Texel. The imposing Maartenskerk church forms its centre, surrounded by charming streets, alleys with old gables, a handful of shops, restaurants and a café.
Oosterend was once called the “Jerusalem of the North” because of the seven churches and church communities that used to be in the village. Three remain today. Historically, Oosterend lay right on the sea, with fishing as its main source of income.
Several walking routes start from the farm, including the historic Leitjesroute and the green route along the old Wadden Sea dike.

Texel has 7 villages in total, each with its own character. A short overview below.
De Cocksdorp
The youngest village on the island, home to Texel’s symbol: the 150-year-old lighthouse. At the northernmost point the Wadden Sea and the North Sea meet. Seals are often spotted on the beach. The northern dune area offers beautiful walking routes with rare bird species.
De Koog
Texel’s seaside resort. The centre has many small shops, terraces, restaurants and cafés. Dunes of Texel National Park borders De Koog. The pine forest and the beautiful nature areas De Muy and De Slufter are nearby. Beach pole 17 is the hotspot for kitesurfers.
De Waal
An idyllic, small village where the atmosphere of times past still lingers. Here you’ll find Museum Waelstee, with an exhibition on island life 100 years ago. Polder Waalenburg is owned by Natuurmonumenten. Guided walks through the Schorren are loved for their rare flowers and meadow birds.
Den Burg
The “capital” of Texel, with a historic heart and a wide range of unique shops and pretty spots. Around half of all Texel residents live here. The village offers art galleries, terraces, restaurants, a museum, swimming pool and cinema.
Den Hoorn
The southernmost village borders the Dunes of Texel National Park. Its cosy little streets, home to many artists, are characteristic. The famous white church is wonderfully photogenic in the Texel landscape. In spring the village sits among colourful tulip fields.
Oudeschild
The only Texel village right on the sea. Tides occasionally flood the quay, making a unique high-water dinner possible. Home port of the Texel fishing fleet. At Museum Kaap Skil you’ll discover beachcombing and Texel’s maritime past.
Oosterend
The picturesque village of Oosterend is just a stone's throw away. This protected village with its white houses and the oldest church on Texel breathes tranquillity, close to the Wadden Sea and the bird reserves.
